About the Canadian Sales Tax Calculator
Choose a province or territory, then type the subtotal, the tax or the total — the other two update instantly using that region's combined sales tax rate. It works forwards (add tax to a price) and backwards (find the price before tax).
Canada's sales tax varies by region: some provinces charge only the 5% federal GST, some combine the federal and provincial parts into a single HST, and others add a separate PST or QST on top of GST.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?
GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax. HST (harmonized sales tax) combines the federal and provincial portions into one rate. PST is a separate provincial sales tax charged alongside GST, and Quebec's version is the QST.
How do I take the tax out of a total price?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. For a 13% rate, divide by 1.13. Or enter the total in the calculator and read the subtotal.
Which provinces charge only GST?
Alberta and the three territories — Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut — charge only the 5% federal GST.
