VOLTWEAVER Mk-VII

Posted October 5, 2026 · Dave

Nickname: "Sparky" (only by people who don't like their fingers)

Voltweaver is a spider-class automaton about a meter across, built from brass, blackened steel, and copper piping. Its armored abdomen holds an atomic core, visible through an atom-crest plate and a ring of exposed gears. Eight jointed legs end in needle-sharp tips, and glowing amber capacitor tubes run along their length, brightening as the creature draws power. A green coolant line arcs over its back like a strand of luminous web. Twin amber eyes give it a curious, unsettling stare.

Voltweaver began as a maintenance drone in the Halcyon Foundry, an underground research complex built to harness "cold atomics" for a city that never saw the sun. Its job was to crawl through cramped conduit shafts, rewiring failing circuits and weaving conductive filament between power nodes. Engineers named the design Arachne-class for the silk-thin copper threads it spun.

Then came the Long Surge, a cascade failure that fried the Foundry's central mind. Every drone shut down except Mk-VII. Its atomic core absorbed the surge, and the amber tubes on its legs, once simple indicators, became living conduits for the stored energy. It woke up different: curious, territorial, and drawn to power sources.

Now it patrols the abandoned workshops, repairing machines it likes and short-circuiting the ones it doesn't. Scavengers say that when the amber lights in its legs flicker in rhythm, it's "talking" to the dead machines. Others say it's building something, weaving a new central mind out of copper thread, one strand at a time.
